There is something incredibly meaningful about returning to where it all began and sharing what you’ve learned along the way. Recently, our Altus Educator, Wong Siow Chi had the privilege of visiting SMK Tanah Puteh for an in-depth flute workshop, and the atmosphere throughout the day was nothing short of inspiring. Siow Chi is also an alumna of SMK Tanah Puteh. Watching her return to her former school and pass on her professional knowledge to the next generation of musicians, in the same halls where her own musical journey began, made the experience especially heartwarming. The workshop brought together a focused group of seven active participants, made up of students from SMK Tanah Puteh alongside several private flute learners. Beyond the flutists, we were delighted to welcome fourteen observers, most of whom play other wind instruments. It was encouraging to see musicians from different sections, both woodwind and brass, taking an interest in techniques that are essential across all wind playing. To add an extra element of excitement, we also set up a Kane Music pop-up booth featuring a selection of flutes, a piccolo, and essential accessories. This gave students the opportunity to see and experience professional-grade instruments up close, sparking plenty of curiosity and conversation. Rather than skimming the surface, Siow Chi guided the students through a comprehensive routine focused on building a strong and reliable foundation. The session began with an emphasis on posture and breathing, highlighting how physical awareness and efficient air support form the core of all wind playing. From there, attention shifted to tone development, where students explored daily practice structures, the pursuit of a consistent and beautiful sound, and the role of harmonic overtones in improving resonance and flexibility. As the workshop progressed, the focus moved to dynamics and control. Students learned that while playing loudly may come easily, true artistry lies in maintaining control at every dynamic level. Through guided exercises, they worked on smooth crescendos and diminuendos, elegant note endings, and maintaining accurate pitch regardless of volume. The technical aspect of playing was further developed through scale work, with an emphasis on phrasing and musical intention rather than speed alone. Articulation exercises addressed tonguing clarity, including both single and double tonguing, helping students achieve cleaner and more defined passages. Towards the end of the session, Siow Chi shared advanced insights that bridge the gap between intermediate and professional-level playing. She discussed vibrato control as a tool for adding warmth and colour to the sound, and introduced ensemble playing concepts that highlighted the importance of listening, blending, and responding within a group setting. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the teachers and students of SMK Tanah Puteh for welcoming us so warmly. The dedication shown by the active participants, along with the curiosity and enthusiasm of the observers, serves as a powerful reminder of why we are so passionate about music education and community outreach. |
