The Outreach Youth Band, widely known as OYB, stands as one of Malaysia’s premier audition-based youth wind ensembles for musicians aged 16 to 22. Formerly known as An Uncommon Journey, OYB is a comprehensive music education initiative under the patronage of The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre and UCSI University. With a strong focus on artistic excellence, leadership, and performance, the programme continues to nurture the next generation of musicians through high-quality training, meaningful collaborations, and inspiring musical experiences.

At its heart, OYB is dedicated to offering talented young wind band musicians an outstanding musical journey. Through guidance from world-class educators, innovative repertoire, equal opportunities, and the friendships formed along the way, the ensemble creates an environment where young musicians can grow both artistically and personally.

The 2025 concert programme reflected this spirit beautifully, presenting a vibrant and international repertoire featuring works by American, Argentine, Japanese, Spanish, and Southeast Asian composers. Over two days, 57 young musicians came together to deliver performances filled with energy, dedication, and musical depth. This year’s edition was made even more special with the presence of guest conductor Dr Nipatdh Kanchanahuta from Kasetsart University, Thailand, alongside oboe soloist Cheong Wei Xuan.

Held in conjunction with the Festival Orkestra Kuala Lumpur 2025 and proudly supported by Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, the event brought together educators, performers, supporters, and audiences in a shared celebration of youth music-making. Kane Music was honoured to be one of the supporting partners, alongside organisations such as CG Flute Academy, The Flute Store, and Koje Reeds.

As part of our support, we set up an exhibition booth to showcase our products and services. We also operated a repair booth, providing quick adjustments and essential repairs for participants who needed last-minute assistance before the concert. From baritone saxophones and clarinets to flutes and more, several instruments were serviced and restored by our technician, Annie, ensuring the musicians could step on stage with confidence.

Before the concert began, we also had the opportunity to engage with the students through an educational session introducing the oboe and bassoon. OYB musicians kindly demonstrated the sound and character of each instrument, offering valuable insight for younger players. Kane Music also performed a short flute piece for the school students, adding a musical touch to the learning experience.

One of the unexpected highlights at our booth was the lucky draw. The spinning wheel attracted plenty of excitement, with many participants and visitors taking part and walking away with prizes, smiles, and fond memories of the day.

Above all, we are grateful to have played a small part in supporting these young musicians. Being able to help them adjust and repair their instruments so they could perform at their very best was truly rewarding. Events like the Outreach Youth Band annual concert provide an invaluable platform for young musicians from various schools and institutions to learn, perform, and flourish. They gain the chance to work with professional musicians and perform under the baton of esteemed conductors such as Dr Nipatdh Kanchanahuta, experiences that can shape their musical journeys for years to come.

We are proud to be one of the supporters of this meaningful initiative and sincerely hope to see more concerts and programmes like this in the future, continuing to inspire and empower the next generation of musicians.
